The Promoters having had the very valuable property (as described below) offered to them by the Proprietor, and having made very satisfactory arrangements for the purchase or lease of the same, they have determined to place the property, aud the advantages connected with it, before the Public, and to develop what, in their opinion must prove to be a most successful undertaking, and one that will prove of immense advantage to the District of South Canterbury. A small amount of capital will ho required to purchase the necessary machinery and to put the mine in good working order, so that the Company will be able to pay dividends shortly after starting. Large Lime Kilns are now in course of erection close to the property. The particulars of the property are as follows : It is freehold, of 20 acres in extent, the property of Mr George Meredith. In the land two shafts have been sunk. The main, or working shaft is 9ft by sft wide, and is 32ft deep, from which coal has been raised from a seam 2ft thick. The shaft is timbered from the surface. The other shaft referred to (half a chain from the main shaft) is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ft do ;p, aiid is well timbered, and lias been sunk through two seams of coal of s£t and 4ft respectively on to a 2ft 6in seam. Fire clay is found in large quantities, and is pronounced by competent authority to be eminently adapted for pottery and sanitary pipes, gas retorts, fire-bricks, &c. The coal is easily obtained, and is of the finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for the production of gas and for steam purposes has been proved by reliable tests. As this coal is admitted to bo areally good coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant supplies in depots, so that the public can always get what they may raquire. Building stone is found on the propeity, and marble within a few chains, of a very superior description, also abounds. The Building Stone is a fine white stone, easily worked, and does not disintegrate from exposuie to weather, some quantity of this stone having been i;sed in the building of the Christchurch Cathedral. A large quantity of good Timber is in close proximity to the giound and easily obtainable. The Coal-has been tried for steam purposes and found to answer admirably, as the following testimonials show.: Timaru, Nov, 29th, 1880. To Mr George Meredith. Kakahu. SIR, —I hare used the Coal supplied by you from the Kakahu Mine (about five tons) in my Mill at Timaru and found it most satisfactory, and consider the Coal well adapted to be used for steam purposes. I found it answer admirably, much better than Newcastle Coal alone.
