LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Voting Qualification in Italy.—ln Italy every voter must be twenty-five years old, able to read and write, and pay taxes to the amount of forty lire. Football.—A meeting of the No. 1 Company Temuka Rifle Volunteers will be held in the Royal' Hotel, at 8 o'clock on Saturday evening Dextfor the purpose of-forming*a Volunteer. Football Club. .T.M.I.A.— The subject&r the essay to be delivered this evening in the Good Templar Hall, at half past seven o'clock will be "Monsy—its origin, utility attd power." to be delivered by Mr Diddams.

An Example.—As instancing an example worthy of imitaticn in South Canterbury we may mention that Sandhurst, in. Victoria, has upwards of fifty miles of streets planted with flourishing elms, pines,, oaks,, and eucalypti. Why does not our paternal government go in for planting the lines of railway ?■

A- Warning.—We would' a'ou'nd a note of warning to those members of the Civil Service who like a drop or two occasionally. Turn teetotallers or you may possibly be- having the government imitatiug the example of that in Victoria in having private detectives stationed in this official refreshment rooais noting alcoholic tendencies;

A .Remarkable Egg.—A remarkable egg was laid by a black Spanish hen belonging to the manager of the Napier Working Men's Club last week. The egg wan of enormous size, and weighed a quarter of a pound. On breaking the outside shell it was found that there was a second and complete egg inside. The outer egg had no yoke, but the inner one was complete in every way. Journalistic — We are in receipt of the first number of the Wairarapa Star, an evening paper published in the Liberal interest. From the paper before lis we notice its advertisement columns well filled which argues well for it future prosperity. It is well compiled and altogether is a very presentable sheet. Mr J. Ivess is -fclie proprietor. Temuka Morality..—As iristaricrhg the morality of tHe Temukaites, we have to Mention the feet'■ that on the Queen's Birthday there were no arrests made for drunkenness. We have the greater pleasure in stating this on the ground that a few days ago the township was. greatly malinged by a certain evening contemporary published not 100 miles from Timaru, in reference to the fighting, # and stone throwing cases disposed of in?the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Monday last. Comparison in this is odious the more especially as there is but one guardian of the peace located here whilst in Timaru there are about a dozen.
