The .shaft is timbered from the surface. , The other shaft referred to (half a chain from the main shaft) is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ft deep, and is well timbered, and has been sunk through two seams of coal of s'ft and 4ft respectively on to a 2ft 6ra seam. Fire •clay is found in large 'quantities, and is pronounced by competent authority to bo •eminently adapted for pottery and. sanitary pipes, gas retorts, fiVe-bricks, &c. The coal is easily obtained, and is of the finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for the production of gas and for steam purposes has been proved by reliable tests. As this coal is admitted to be a really good coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant supplies in depots, so that the public can always get what they m*y raquirc. Building stone is found on the property, . and marble within a few chains, of a very superior description, also abounds. The Building Stone is a fine white stone,' easily worked, and does not disintegrate from exposuie to some quantity of this stone having been used in the building of the Christchurch Cathedral. A large quantity of good Timber is in close proximity to the ground and easily obtainable. The Coal has been tried for steam purposes and found to answer .■admirably, as the following testimonials show.;: Timaru, Nov. 29th, 1880, »To Mr George Meredith. Kakahu. . Sib, —I have used the Coal supplied fey you from the Kakahu Mine (about five tons) in my Mill at Timaru and found it most satisfactory, and consider the Coal "well adapted to be used for steam purposes.
