The Tumeka Leader SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 1881. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A Failure. —The attempt to hold a r im and ewe fair at Oamaru this year has failed.

Missing.— Mr Rice Foulkes, butcher, of Christchurch, has been missing for several days. Bank Holiday. To-day being St. George’s Day, ap;d a statute holiday, the Bank of New Zealand will be closed. Election of Synodsman. —Yeaterday the nomination and election of a Synodsman for the Parish of Temuka took place, resulting in A. Cox, Esq. being elected. Railway Returns. —The following is the return of receipts fci the four-weekly period, ending March sth, of the Amber-le}*-Kingston line, viz., £51,407 Is lid.

The Christchurch Cemetery.—According to the official register of burials at this cemetery, there have been since April, 1851, March ,31st, 1831—a period of thirty years —3284 burials.

The Duke of Manchester. —His Grace the Duke of Manchester sailed for Sydney on Thursday last. He is understood to have been very favorably impressed with Canterbury and its resources. Hunting.—The hunting season commences in Wanganui on the first Saturday in May. Mr Bradley, of Otago, assumes the mastership, his pack of hounds and the ideal pack being amalgamated. Bank ok New Zealand, —The Bank of New Zeahnd’B half-yearly meeting report shows a nett profit of £76,464, with the balance froin last half-year of of £28,337., The total for division is £99,801. Watts. on the Bench.—A good deal of dissatisfaction is expressed at Mr Watts being appointed Resident Magistrate at Oamaru, and it is proposed by the residents in that favored city to petition the Government against his being transferred to Oamaru.

In Bankruptcy. Will iam Zjesler, of Tiraaru, a certificated accountant in bankruptcy, has been appointed trustee in the estate of Daniel Sullivan, of Totara Flat. Erancis Tavender, of Ternuka, farmer, hat filed a declaration of insolvency in the District Court at Timaru.

The Revenue. —According to the Wellington correspondent of the Christchurch Dress, results of the past financial year’s,operations are thus, approximately estimated —Customs, about £1,307,000. or £57,000 above the estimate ; stamps, £152,700, or £2,700 above the estimate railways, about £829.000, or £lll,OOO, below the estimate ; postal, £lsl*ooo, or £6OOO above the estimate ; telegraph, about £72,000, or £BOQO short; judicial, about £57,000, or £3QOO under; land trasfer and deeds registry, £38,700, or £6700, to the good ; land sales, about £299,000, or £99,000 on the right side.

Inquest. —An inquest will be held in the Courthouse, before J. N. Hornbrook, jun,, was totally destroyed. Whitblaw in More Trouble, —The late superintendent of the Wellington Lunatic Asylum has been called upon by the Crown to show cause why h,e should not be adjudged to pay to the Crown the sum of £270, being the aggregate amount of salary due to, his mother, Mrs Kettle, whilst acting as matron of the asylum, .and received by him op he? account.. Encouraging N atiwe Industries, —The "Gazette contains a notice that a bonus of >£soo will be given for the first 500 tons of butter or 50 tons of cheese (produced ‘in a factory working on the American principle, and to which factory any farmer, subject to certain conditions, may send b>s milk), which shall be exported from New Zealand and sold at such prices in a foreign market as shall show that the i rtides are of fair quality. A bonus of l£soo will also be given on the first 100 tons of fresh meat exported from New Zealand hi vessels fitted with refrigerating machinery ; such meat must be collected ha a refrigerating chamber in this Colony, and must be landed in Europe in a sound and marketable condition. Sparrow Club Meeting. —On Thursday evening last a meeting of persons interested in the formation of a Sparrow Club was. held in the Crown Hotel, Mr J. Talbot in the chair, Mr Mossman read replies to the letters he had forwarded to the various clubs in the colony, after which considerable' discussion took place in regard to. the working of the new club subscriptions etc. It was decided that 10s be the amount of subscription. The following gentlemen were then elected as Committee :—Messrs Talbot, 11. A* Barker Paterson, Parkes, Wright, Wheelband, Mossman, Wareing and Pilbrow. Five to form a quorum. Mr Gray moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman, Messrs Mossman and Pilbrow for the interest they had taken in the formation of the club. The Committee held a meeting afterwards, when it was decided that a meeting should be held on Monday evening next at same time and place to elect the officers for the the Club. Suffering from Excessive Drinking. —On Thursday morning a man’s clothes were found near the Sneyd’s Arm’s Hofei,, Kaiapoi, and subsequently it was reported that about a mile further on, there was a naked man. roaming about, Mr Whitefoord, R. M., reported the matter to the police, and Sergeant Gilbert went in search. Prior to his arrival the man who turned out to be Mr R H. Topping, had been induced to go into Turner’s flour mill, and bad been covered with a sack till other clothes were obtained. His own were soon forthcoming and then he was taken to the lock-up. During the forenoon the Mayor heard a charge of vagrancy against Topping, and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment The accused some months ago attempted suicide by cutting his throat. He is in the receipt of regular remittances from England, which he invariably spends in drink.

Auction Sale. —On Thursday last Messrs Wildie, Allan and Stumbles, in conjunction with Mr K. F. Gray, held a sale of pedigree shorthorn, and other cattle, r n farm of Mr J, Meyer. There was a large attendance of buyers, and the following prices were obtained : Cows—Strawberry, £l2; Crump, £l3; Lady Northcote, £l3 ; Fuschia, £ll 10s ; Fairy Queen, £l3 10. Heifers—Butterfly £6 ; Sunflower. £1 ; Rosebud, £8 ; Violet, £7 ; Young Countess, £6 ; Miss Bemuka, £5 10s ; Magnolia, £6 5s ; Narcissus, £2 ; Cineraria, £2 ; Lady Rufus,, £9 ; Miss Floy, £9. Cows in full profit—Maggie, £5 ; Ginger, £9 10s ; Elsie, £8 ; Lilly,' £6 15 ; Mary, £6 ; Nob, £6 5s ; Snowy, £7 ss; Lottie, £5 5s ; Daisy. £7 5s ; Minnie, £6 5s ; Mammy, £4; Cherry, £lO 10s ; Beauty, £6 15s ; Spot, £6 15s ; Berry, £6 ; Nancy, £8 15s ; Nellie, £5 2a 6d. Two year old heifers fetched from £3 10s to £3 15s each.
