EASTERTIDE IN TEMUKA.

The only event of note occurring in Temuka this Eastei has been the departure of the No. 1 Company Temuka Rifle Volunteers, and the Drum and Fife Band, for the scene of the encampment at Oamarn, who left the railway station by the express train on Good Friday, and we hope on their return they will be enabled to give a good account of themselves. According to a telegram we learn that on Saturday evening last a band contest took place, at which the Temuka Drum and Fife Band competed. On Good Friday the usual services were held at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, and also at the Roman Catholic Church. Easter Day.

On Sunday last, being the Easter Festival, St. Saviour’s Church was, in accordance with the usual custom, prettily decorated. The services were semi-choral, the anthem for the morning being taken from the text, “Thine, 0 Lord, is the Greatness,” and for the evening, “ O Praise God in His Holiness.” The Rev. j. Chaffers-Welsh, Incumbent of the Parish, preached at morning and evening services to crowded congregations. At the Roman Catholic Church, High Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Fanvel, the Church being crowded at each service.

At both the Presbyterian and Wesleyan Churches there were large congregations, more especially at the latter, the Rev. Mr Fee, the newly-.appointed minister, preaching his introductory sermons.

Easter Monday. In the township all the shops, offices, and the Bank of New Zealand were closed, and strict holiday kept, many of the residents taking their departure by the early train for Timaru, to witness the sports in the Old Show Grounds, where a Temperance fete was held. At about half-.past nine avm. the members of the Temuka Brass Band assembled opposite the Grown Hotel, and played a lively air prior tu their departure for Timaru, where they were engaged by the Temperance Fete Committee to perform riming the sports. Throughout the day the township presented the appearance ox a deserted village.
