THE LOVE OF GAMBLING.

In one of the novels of M. Dumas pere (cays the Evening Standard), it is related how a a inveterate gambler, having staked and lost everything belonging to him, staked his valet. This fictitious incident baa just been reproduced in real life,- the gambler being a French rsg-gatherer, whose passion for the game of ha* led to most unhappy consequences for himself. A few evenings ago, he was , engaged at his favorite pastime with* friend whose luck at cards was continual. The rag-fatherer'a resource* were quickly drained } he staked whenins porse was emptied, bis watch, thd little articles he had in bis pocket, aud his hat. There remained, seemingly, nothing to gamble for, when a. rather origiual idea struck him. Tho young woman who lived with bim as his mistress was looking 'on at the game.
