A READY ANSWER.
It is related of Thadeus Stevens that, when he was a young rami, piactising in the courts of Pennsylvania, lie lost his case in one instance by what Stev'-ns considered an erroneous ruling of the judge ; and, being completely disgusted, he jumped up and hanged about the law books on the table, making considerable noise while searching for his own, picked up his hat and started for the door, scattering imprecations in all directions as ho was leaving the curtroom. The judge feelliiig that his dignity was injured,, arosj. pompously, and called out, “Mr Stevens!” MrStevens stopped, turned round, and made a deferential bow (for he, was always deforcntal to the court),'-’and - the - ' jvffige continued—“ Mr Stevens do you intend by such conduct to express your contempt for this court ?” Mr Stevens, with that nvck seriousness which was a marked characteristic of his, answered — “ Express my contempt for this • court ! No, sir, I was trying tomonceal it, yer honor !”
