RATHER STRANGE.

Newspapermen have sometimes queer experiences. Here is one told of by a Taranaki paper.—Last week a quiet, inoffensive old bachelor living in solitary seclusion in G street,New Plymouth had his premises invaded by a young lady, and the object of the visit he has not yet been able to ascertain. On getting up in the morning, as usual, and opening the back door, he was dismayed to see a lady's hat, trimmed in the height of fashion, lying at the door. He was not personally acquainted with either the hat or its owner, and he was quite at a Joss to account for strange appearance. After reflection he thought he might venture to take the hat inside, and when he had done so, he subjected it to a close examination. First of all there was a delicate wlv.te lace fringe, looking s-o fresh and neat that he was half afraid to touch it, then came a silver cord running " fore and aft " which he thorght looked very charming, and then came a host of trimmings and etceteras, which, being an old bachelor, he was totally ignorant of, but which he admitted looked very coquettish. Having 'occupied all the morning examining the hat he began to think what, he should do with it, and he at last decided he would apply to this office tor advice- With our usual acuteness for business we advised him to advertise for the owner, but lie said perhaps tha young lady might be offended. Finding it wps no use trying to get an advertisement out of him, we advised him to gWe the hat to the police, and Mr Bullen no doubt, would be able to find the owner. This idea seemed to please him, and he left our office in high glee.
