Wo learn that a gentleman purposes waiting on a number of our lady friends for the purpose of enlisting their services as collectors of subserp tious in behalf of. our town clock. The object being a praiseworthy one, we trust that none of those ladies requested to canvass will decline. A few men in the employ of the Temuka Road Board might profitably be engaged for a day or two in clearing the side channels of the ,'ccumuLted rubbish, otherwise, should a heavy fall of rain take place, our stree s will become flooded. A Dairy Farmers’ Association has been formed in Akaroa. having for its object the exporting of cheese. In Otago the Dunedin City Council and other local bodies hive decided to reduce the registration fee from 10s to 7s 6d on those dogs that were registered last year. This is as it ought to be, and we would recommend the Geraldine County Council to go and do likewise. In advertisements over the leader heading in to day’s issue it is notified that Mr Robert Wilkin is on his way Home to England, where his presence will be a. good guarantee to shippers that their produce placed in his hands for sale in the Homo market will be made the most of, and every parcel made to stand upon its own merits. Tl will be seen by reference to our advertising columns that Mr Robinson has increased the reward to £5 to anyone who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of his cattle. It seems a number of cattle thefts haie been perpetrated in the district lately. It is impossible for stockowners to keep their eyes on their property always, and a difficult, thing to follow them to a distant part whese th 'y n re supposed to he taken and sold. We hope the guilty parties may speedily be found and made an example of. In Edwards’ County, Illinois, there has been no place for eighteen years where a man could buy intoxicating liquor as a beverage. The terms of Court in that county are from two to two days’ length. The imprisonments are from one to two persons in a period of five or six yeais. Only one person has gone to the State prison from that county, and he went onLide the county and got drunk, went homo and killed Ins wife. But little litigation is had before the Justices of the Peace. The people are not in debt. In M\y, 1869, there were but two mortgages on record in the county. The poor expenses in the county are but 500 dollars a year, while in a neighboring county, not half, so large, where they sell liquor, the} 7 are B.ooo, dollars a year. The taxes assessed and paid are 33 per cent less than any other county of Illinois.
