A KING AND GENTLEMAN.
King Humbert, of Italy* is a man of kindly feeling, and does many an amiable thing. When at the Turin exhibition lately, an old usher suddenly interposed between the; king and his attendants, and thrust ■ a petition into, his hand. The attendants were much alarmed. This usher, an old soldier scarred with wounds, had formerly often tried, but ih vain, to accost the king, and purposely engaged as a ’ servant to the exhibition in the' hope of an opportunity occurring. Baron Gamba severely reproved the man for his breach of discipline, and the syndic at once dismissed the usher. The king, however, begged Baron Gamba to keep- the petition, and restore it to him on his departure, and insisted thatthe usher should be forgiven. An hour later, when just leaving theexhibition, the king remembered the petitioner, and again urged the forgiveness of his fault, saying to Baron Gamba and the syndic, “ Promise me that the usher shall not suffer nor be dismissed. I shall be sorry indeed;”
