MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held in (he Road Board Office, Peel Forest, on Friday, the 21st inst. PRESENTThe Hon. J. B. A. Acland, Messrs 0. G. Tripp, J. Heney, R. Mackay, andJ. Wilson. . This being the first meeting since the election of the new Board, it was proposed by Mr C. G. Tripp, seconded by Mr J. Wilson, and carried, “ That the Hon. J. B. A Acl nd be elected chairman for the current year.’” MINUTES. Tha minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and confirmed :
From the Secretary to the ■ Timarii Harbour Board in reference to the election of a representative for the Timaru Harbour Board. From the General Crown Lands Office, Wellington, stating that Reserves IBb3, and 2163 has been vested in the Board.
From Mr Michael Burke declining.to carry out No. 49 contract. From, the Provincial District Auditor requesting that the accounts of the Board be made up and ready for his audit at Geraldine, on Jan 14 th.
The accounts were laid before the Board, certified by the Auditor as correct, approved of aud countersigned by the chairman. From Mr J. L. Wilson furnishing a statement of expenses incurred by him in repairs to theStonecrusher.' Resolved —“ That the Board agree to pay half the cost of the new swing jaw, as it was broken as soon alter the time specified in the agreement and that the Board is also willing to pay the cost of the patterns foi; new castings, but before doing so will require a statement from Mr Anderson that he will hold them as the sole property of the Board.’* From Mr P. Newman enclosing a statement of the expenses and receipts of the pound at Peel Forest from Ist May to 31st Dec, showing a loss of L 3 9s 4d and stating that he could not keep the pound any longer, unless the Board agreed to pay him something for keeping it Resolved “ That the poundkecper be allowed the sura of L 5 for keeping the pound for the past year, and that he be paid the same for the present jear.” Resolved—•“ That a unwtttig. »f- ****-. payers be called to consider the question of bringing the Regulations of Local Elections Act into force in the district, such meeting to be bold on Monday, the I4tlv, February.” Mr John Casey had an interview with and offered to carry out No. 49 con tract for the amount of Burlce’s tender (LSO). Resolved —“Tint John Casey’s offer be accepted. ” Mr Dunlop had an interview with the Board in reference to a culvert built by him abroSsfthe drain in .front of his store at Peel Forest,,when it was resolved that the Board pay for the timber in the culvert, and, the owners of the property pay the' cost of building it.
The clerk was directed, to make application for a gravel reserve adjoining Section 24774.,
Resolved: —“ That tenders be invited for improving and shingling the road on the north side of the Opuha river, near Mr Edward’s land ; also for building a cottege on reserve 2309, near Fairlie Creek, and, for picking stones on the road near Mr Tripps.” In reference to the circular form the Ashburton Oo.unty Council calling attention to present railway tariff, it was resolved — <£ lhat the Mount Peel Road Board thank the Ashburton County Council for drawing the attention of tfie public to the unfairness of the present railway tariff, and hope the government will attend to their letter of Nov. 11th, 1880, and that the clerk write to the Colonial Secretary stating that the Mount Peel Road Board consider the present railway tariff most unfair as shown by the Ashburton County letter of the 11th Nov, as it is found that wool can be senttoTimaru from Peel Forest at a gain of lOd per bale saved by dray carriage over the cost of draying it to the Rangitata Railway Station, thence by rail to Tiraaru. A considerable quantity of grain is also likely to be carried from Fairlie Creek, on account of the high tariff for gram at present charged.” Account to the amount of L 784 9s 8d were passed for payment, the Board then adjourned.
