AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Sydney, January, 19. Arrived—Steamship City of New York, from Auckland. The Intercolonial Conference met today. T:>e question of securing uniformity as to regulations for the admission of barristers in the various colonies was considered, but uo decision was arrived at. A Committee was appointed to inquire into the recent massacres in the South Sea Islands j and also to investigate the powers possessed by the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, with the view if necessary, to raemoralise the Home Government on the subject, A resolution was adopted, in favor of the construction of railways to connect the various capitals in Australia, and it was further decided to pursue identical action in regard to legislative measures for the regulation of Chinese immigration. The Hon Thomas Lick, the New Zealand delegate, arrived by the City of New York, and joins in the deliberations of the Conference to- morrow., Jan 20. The Intercolonial Conference met again to-day, the Hon Thos. Dick being present as the representative of New Zealand. The question of the influx of Chinese was under consideration the greater part of the sitting, and a rs-ohi-tion was finally passed setting forth that the introduction of Chinese at the expense in one colony was prejudical all the colonies. A Committee was W further appointed to prepare a memorial . to the Home Government on the subject. The Steamship Collaroy, belonging to the Newcastle Steamship Company and a regular trader between Newcastle and Sydney, has run ashore to the northward of Manley Beach, on the coast near Sydney. It is expected she will get off again soon. Sailed —Union Co.’s s.s. Rotorua, for Auckland.
