Reinforcements of cavalry and infantry have been ordered for service against the Boers, and have sailed for Natal. The reports now received point to the possibility of attacks on the milita y establishments at Gosport and Chester Castle, and extensive precaution'! aiv being taken at both [daces t» witn-tand any assault. Jan. 12.
Tim trial of the L ml Leaguers at Dublin is still proceeding. The case for the prosecution has closed, and the addresses of counsel for the defence are now being heard. The debate on the Address in Reply was resumed in the House of Commons to-day, and lasted during the grjater part of the sittings. Lord Hartington made an extensive speech, in the course of which he severely attached the Irish Land League and its mode of action. Alluding to the Land Bill which has been introduced by Government, he expressed the opinion that its provisions were founded on the laws of justice to both tenant and landlord. The debate stands further adjourned. The detached squadron is under orders to proceed to the Cape It is understood that this movement is due to t e Boer rebellion in the Transvaal.
It has transpired that a general agreement exists amongst the Powerthat their Ambassadors at Athens should be instructed to endeavour to persuade the Greek Government to agree to arbitration for the settlement of the frontier difficulty with Turkey. Constantinople, Jan. 11.
Osman Pasha has been appointed Minister of war in the Turkish Ministry. This is generally considered to be an ini dioation of a warlike intention towards Greece on the part of the Sultan Athens, January 11th.
The Greek Government has had under reconsideration the proposal of the Powers that it should arbitrate tor a settlement of the frontier. The Govern ment has informed the Powers that it must decline the proposal, unless on the basis of the gnarantee to be made to Greece as first stated. Bombay, Jan. 11th. News has been received here that a plot has been discovered among the natives of Kolapone, a town in the south of this Presidency, to assassinate all the European residents in the place. Owing to the detection of the conspiracy the danger was averted, and a number of arrests have been made of the would-be assassins. The transports with a regiment of the Native army ordered to the Transvaal sailed to-day for Durban, in Natal. Jan. 12. Information has been received that the report received yesterday, that a plot had been discovered amongst the natives of Kolapore to assassinate the European x’esidents, is entirely without foundation.
Capetown, Jan. 11. News has been received that further t hostilities have occurred between the 1 Cape forces and the rebel Basutos. The latter m considerable numbers, made an attack on Colonel Carrington’s position at Mafeting, but were repulsed after heavy fighting. The enemy suffered considerable loss. Jan. 12. Communication, though of an intermittent character, has again hemvestablished between Natal and the and information has been &*eived regarding the position of the British, troops at Potchefstroom. The Boers have laid siege to the place, but the garrison can hold out for a months having sufficient supplies for that period, and it is hoped that by that time rein, forcements can be sent for the relief of the besieged.
