TEMUKA ANNUAL BOXING DAY SPORTS.

Stewards t Messrs Jaines Blythe, Robert Donn, Henry Dunford, Joseph Whitehead, and James Davis. Handicappers —John Patterson and Boyd Vhoiuson, Esq Starter —Mr Charles Storey. Judges—Messrs N. C. Nicholas and J. T. M. Ollivier Olerkof Course—Mr E. Vallender Hon Treasurer—Mr E. F. Gray Hon Secretary— Mr Wm Et. Upricbard

The above sports, under the auspices of the Independent Order of Oddfeliows, came off in Mr Marshall's paddock yesterday. The Fife and Drum Band, during the early part of the day, paraded.the main street playing several lively airs, and during the sports contributed their quota to the day's amusemeut. The attendance was good, close on £OO people being preseut; and the weather was all that could be desired. All the events were well contested, and the Committee deserve credit for the satisfactory manner in which everything connected with the sports were carried out. The following is the result of the different events :

1. 150 Yards Handicap—lst prize, 30s ; 2nd prize, 10s ; entries, 2s 6d S. MciJratney ... ... 1 a. D. Waddell 2 Eight started. This was a well contested race, and was won by 2 yards 2. 150 Yards Handicap (Boys under 16)— Ist, 12s 6d ; 2nd, 7s 6d ; entries, Is La very ... ... ... 1 Oiiivier ... 2

Seven started This was also a capital race, Luvery winning - from Ollivier by a yard only 3. Running High Jump —Ist, 20s ; 2nd, 10s ; entrance, 2s 6d J). Chute ... ... 1 Collins ... ... 2

There were only three entries for this event, and as two—Collins and Waddel—fell out at 4 ft. 8 in, it was decided to allow three extra tries fur the second prize, whicii resulted in Collins heating Waddel easily. 5. 250 Yards Handicap—lst, 40s ; 2nd, 20s ; entrance, 2s 6d ' a . Oldfield and Waddel also ran but after going about 100 yards fell out, thus leaving the race to Smith aud Mcßratney. After a good race between these two, the former landed a winner by about 2 yards. G. 100 Yards Handicap (Girls under 16) Ist, workbox ; 2nd, 5s ; entrance, ml Davies ... 1 Wyutt ' ... 2 About 16 others started. The race caused a considerable amount of amusement, all running well together. Davis came in a winner by two yards, Wayatt coming in second with nothing to spare, most of the others arriving in a cluster. 7. Vaulting with Pole—lst, 20s ; 2nd, 10s ; entrance, 2s 6d S. S Mcßratney having cleared Bft lin at the first try was declared Hie winner T Mcßrainey and Reid having tied for secorid place, ti'ied conclusions a second time, which resulU-ii again in a tie, both cle .ring 7ft llin It was then decided to divide tue honor for second place Greaves also competed, but only manage J to clear 7ft oin.
