CANTERBURY FARMERS' COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION.

A general meeting of shareholders in the above Association was held in Mr H, Green’s ttorp. oft Saturday, between 150 and 200 being present., Mr: Postlethwaite, as Chairman of the Provisional Directors; explained what had been done up to the present time. It would be necessary for the meeting to elect a Chairman, after which Mr Haraersley would read the Memorandum of Association and the Articles of Association required by the Companies Act 1878 . When the Association was formed it would have to bo registered, when it would become a body corporate. Mr Howell moved, and Mr Dawson seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to the Provisional Directors for the trouble they had taken.

.The-vote was carried by applause. ‘ <-On the motion of Mr Buckle, Mr Postlethwaite was unanimously elected Chairman.

' Mr after tuanking them for tlie honor done him, said the Association would have to be worked slowly and surely. The Articles of Association might;' be improved on, and the Provisional Directors would be on,ly too glad if it could be done. It was for the meeting to propose a number of fit and proper persona, to, apt as Directors, tor the year. The Directors must be ihen who would carry out the programme before them, otherwise the movement would be a failure. If they did so,'the Association would prove one of the greatest boons ever conferred on the people of Canterbury. He could say from his knowledge fhat sush bwUes had been the salvation of farmers in many parts of England. It must be carried out on purely co-operative, that was cash. principles* which meant that they must not go beyond their depth. If they did not adhere to this principle they must sink. He was very glad te see such a large attendance, and hoped next year it would be tenfold greater. He was quite sure the scheme before them was the fight one to. forward the interest of the agricultural portion of the community. (Applause.) Mr Hamersley then; read the proposed Articles of Association, a proceeding which occupied two hours. They were passed after being well discussed and some someudrnents made, one of the most importmeut being that any shareholder holding ten shares shall be eligible for appoint ment on the Directory. Seventeen members were * proposed as Directors, but owing to the lateness of the hour when the Articles had been signed, the election was adjourned till Saturday next at the same hour and place.
