TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above Committee was held on Thursday evening last. Present—Messrs A. Wilson (Chairman), Gray, Russell, Hooper, Harrop, Brown, and Storey. CORRESPONDENCE. 1. From Secretary to Board re resignation of Miss K Mathias, stating that the same would be submitted to the Chairman of the Board,, but in the meantime he would point oxjfc that it is probable that, pending the ad option of a revised scale of staff salaries now under consideration, no new appointment will be. made ; but the Committee would be fully informed on the subject in a few days. 7. From the Board re incidental grants, notifying that the Committee’s application for incidentals had been considered, and whilst admitting the reasonableness of the request, were compelled to refuse the request of the Committee. , HEAD MASTEP.’s REPORT. The head master reported as follows for the month ending November 30 :—No. on Roll—Boys 187, girls 179 ; total 366. Daily average —Boys 126.8, girls 109.4 ; total 236. Highest number present, Nov 23, 1880—Boys 139, girls lIS ; total 257. visitors’ report. The Visiting Committee reported having visited the School on December 3. They found the school in fair order, and the discipline good. They also examined the tanks and water, which was complained of by the last Visiting Committee. They found the pump literally useless for the purpose, and they would recommend that a force pump be obtained, and also that the tank be cut to facilitate the cleaning out of the same. They also inspected the pipe from the water closets, and found it working very unsatisfactory, haying no fall into the pit, but on the contrary leaking from the pipes and percolating into the shingle, INTERVIEW. Mr Torn Davis interviewed the Committee in regapd to the resolutions passed at the last meeting dealing with the wages of the janitor, end stating ho was willing to continue, fire work at a certain sum on condition of not attending so many hours at the school. Mr Davis having retired.

Mr Gray moved, & Mr Hooper seconded, and it was carried, “ That tenders be advertised for, and that a schedule of duties be drawn up.” Mr Storey moved—“ That the Chairman, Secretary, and Head Master be a-Com-mittee to diaw out the schedule of duties, and report at a special meeting to be held on ..Tuesday, Dec. 14," seconded by Mr. Brown, and carried. It was also resolved that services of th° present janitor be retained until the break, ing up of the school. , lie recommendation of the Visiting Committee, It was resolved that Mr Freddy be instructed to attend to the pump in the yard of the master’s house. Mr Stoiey also moved that, in consequence of several children being ill through drinking the impure water at the school, a new force pump be obtained.

Mr Story remarking that the had heard of chiidren having to bring water a considerable distance to the school, the water being so bad. Mr Harrop seconded, and it was carried.

Re partition of the school, Mr Harrop moved, and Mr Brown seconded, “That Mr Storey and himself wait upon Mr Upton asking him to kindly draw up plan and specification for the above. Carried.

Mr Storey moved, Mr Russell seconded, and it was carried, “ That the holidays commence on the 15th December, and the school re-assemble on 10th January, 1881.

A long discussion then ensued on the action taken by the Board of Education iq allowing the High School Scholars to compete for prizes in the public schools.

The Chairman remarked that he had been spoken to by several Chairmen of Committees and others on the question, and great dissatisfaction existed in consequence of the decision of the Board. Mr Hooper moved—“ That the Chairman be asked to cad a meeting of Chairmen and one member of each School Committee to consider the action of the Board in consenting to allow the High School pupils to compere with the Lower Schools jn the forthcoming examinations, (and other important eduoat’on matter ”) seconded by Mr Gray, and carried. Mr Gray informed the Committee that he had let the school house to a good tenant at a weekly rental of 10s. Mr Gray also volunteered his services in superintending the erection of a force pump free of any expense to the Committee.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceeding.
