DISARTROUS FIRE IN DUNEDIN

Dunedin; Dec. 5. ■ One of the most disastrous fires that ever occurreed in Dunedin broke put about four o’clock this morning in a largo wooden building on the reclaimed land, used as an engine and shed by Mr David Proudfoot. 'lt is not known how the fire originated. Two men were on the premises at the t’nie cleaning engines, and so quickly did the flames spread that they had barely . time to escape. The building was completely destroyed and also thirty three tramcars, seven engines, and an immense quantity of oats. The insurances were :—New Zealand L2ooo ; Victoria, L15oo; Standard, Lsoo ; Norwhich Union, Llooo, London and Lancashire, Llooo 'j Trans atlantic, Llooc ; Australian Alliance Lsooo ; National, Llooo ; Hamburg; Llooo. Total, L 9500. It is almost certainly a case of incendiarism., The amounts abovenamed were obtained from the insurance agents’ but Mr Frond foot says •he is insu'-ed for LU.ooo, and be estimates , his loss at L7ooo above this, without reckoning the loss by suspension of traffic • Only three cars are left, and cable messages will be sent to America tomorrow for others. More are on the way here, and every effort will be made keep up traffic. ; >
