ENGLISH AND FOREIGN.

London, Nov. 30. Laycock and Hanlon have now agreed to pull a match for the Championship and LSOO a-side, The race to take place on the 17th January over the usual Thames course. Mr Shaw Lefevre has 1 been appointed Chief Commissioner of public Works, in place of Mr W. P. Adams, appointed Governor of Madras. Mr G. O. Trevelan succeeds Mr Shaw Lefevre as Secretary to the Admiralty. The Land League agitation in Ireland continues to rece’ve considerable support in many parts, and numbers of new members are being enrolled. At Kilde part alone, during the last few days, over 10,000 persons have joined the League. Dec. 1.

The Marquis of Salisbury addressed a large audience at Woodstock, Oxfordshire, last night. In the course of his speech, his Lordship'referred at length to the address* of Earl Granville, at Hanley, on the previous day, and he announced the intentions of Government in regard to Ireland. Alluding to the proposed Land Bill, he said the Tories would lead to the confiscation of the property of landlords, and he ridiculed the idea of creating peasant proprietors in Ireland. Referring to Earl Granville’s announcement tnat Government would introduce a Bill dealing with the present disorder, and providing for the future happiness of Irishmen, his Lordship strongly urged the necessity of first repressing existing anarchy before taking any' steps to remedp the grievances of the people. Government has decided to abolish the positions of Lord Chief Baron of Exchequer and Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas. . Dec. 2. Additional bodies of Marines have' been ordered to Ireland, the importation of firearms being still on the increase, England has made a proposal to the other Powers not to disperse the combined fleet ; and maintain they should still continue to act in concert to execute the remainder of the Treaty.
