A RUNAWAY PRISONER.
Messrs Logan and Brown, J.P.’s, attended at the Gaol on Saturday afternoon to hear a cli.ivge against, John Smith, alias Thomas Hardie, of having on the -18th inst. escaped frpnriega* confinement before tlie expiration of the term for whidh he had been committed .
On being asked to plead, the Prisoner pointed out that it was not stated in the information for what time he had been'committed to Gaol.
Mr Logan : That is the charge. Are youguilty or are you not guilty ! ,V Prisoner ; I arn guilty of going«jLOtn. i under a man who was not fit to be in charge oi me. I want every thing I say in the papers, as I am being unjustly dealt with in the Dunedin Gaol.
Mr Logan That is a plea of guilty. Prisoner . I plead guilty to one "tiling,-but. I want my trial to go on.
