FIRE AT TIMARU.

The Timaru Mechanic's Institute, valued at L3OO, was totally destroyed by fire on Friday night. The fire broke out shortly after 10 o'clock and in a few minutes the whole building was in flames. By 11 o'clock it was destroyed. Part of the building was of old dry wood. All the books and furniture were saved. The Church of England bazaar people had luckily clearel all the ba ance of their goods out, except about li2o worth. There is no clue at present as to the origin of the fire, which broke out in the back or stage part of the building, which was locked up at 7p.m. Several adjoining buildings were in great danger for some time The Court house (next door), being of concrete did not suffer.
