COLONIAL CONTRIBUTION THE IRISH FAMINE FUN.

In connection with the annual visit recently paid by the Lord Mayor of Dublin to . the Gleuchee prison, there was a dejeuner, at which Dr Murray, - Bishop of Maitland, was present. In proposing the Bishop’s health, the Lord Mayor “ took the opportunity of acknowledging the obligations which every one in Ireland felt, and which the members of the Mansion House Committee especially felt, the country was under for the wonderful, the extraordinary generous assistance which in her distress Ireland had received from our Austialian colonies. When he told them that of the LIBO,OOO which had been collected for the Mansion House ' Committee—and which, he was sorry to say had been nearly all spent—some L 90,000 had b en sent by the Australian colonies they could Judge for themselves of the extraordinary generosity which in tine crisis of Ireland's history had been shown by th Jr friends at the antipodes. The matter might be .put in these few simple words—that had it not been for this generosity many Irishmen would have died from starvation. This was not the first time that Australian had shown her generosity. During the Lancashire cotton famine Australia contributed same L50,0c0 1 but on this occasion she had even surpassed herself.*’— * The Freeman’s Journal/
