INQUEST.

An inquest was held yesterday, at 4 p.m. h fore Mr Beetham, Coroner, touching the death of John Bintie’d Glasson, aged 35 years, at the Court house, Temuka. Mr John Ollivier was chosen foreman of the Jury.

Mrs Glasson, wife of the deceased, sworn, deposed : Deceased had been in very low spirits for some time. After he had taken the carbolic acid, I went to him and said “you look very queer.” I asked him what he had been drinking. I then said you have been drinking that acid. I sent for some neighbors I also sent for Sergt Carlyon and Dr Hayes, He was alive, but insensible, when they arrived. He died shortly after their arrival.

Another witness deposed : I saw de* ceased on Sunday, about 4 p.m. I thought he appeared rather depressed in spirits- I thought he had been drinking. Deceased remarked to me, “You are well off.” He said nothing more. Dr Hayes, on being sworn, said ; I saw deceased about 7 p m. on Sunday last. He was breathing heavily and unconscious. 1 gave .Vim <tn emetic, and he tried I o’vomit, but could not do it. He died about 25 minutes after. I made a post mortem examination, I found that the inside of his lips and mouth and windpipe were quite white from the effects of swallowing carbolic acid. I examined the bottle pro dueed, and it contained carbolic acid. I consider, from what I found in the sturnach, that he ban taken about an ounce of tiie acid. I believe that caused his death.

Sergeant Car'yon, sworn, deposed : I was sent for about 7 o’clock on Sunday evening. I found deceased, on my arrival, lying on the floor He was alive, but insensible. I found the bntile pioduced lying outside the gate There was a sma.'l qu uitity of earbol c acid in the bottle. The Coroner having summed up tlie evidence, the jury, after i short deliberation, returned the following verdict :—“That deceased came by his death by drinking carbolic acid whilst in a state of temporary insanity ”
