ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Oct. 7 . Consols are at 98. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is L 15,500,000, being three-quarters oi a million less than last week . There is a fair demand fo r most descriptions of Australian leather at full prices. Shipments of wheat from America to England last week exceeded halfa million quarters. Oct. 8. It is stated that with a view to coerce the Porte, the British Government has proposed, and the Powers have agreed, to occupy and place an embargo on the chief Turkish ports in the iEgean Sea. It is further reported that the Admirals in command of the combined fleets have been instru ted by their respective Governments to carry this into effect. The ‘ Daily News ’ of to-day hints at a possibility of the Sultan being deposed . Intelligence has been received from Teherran that the Kurds inhabiting the district of Kurdistan, on the western border of Persia, have risen in large numbers against the local authorities, and are attacking and pillaging the towus and villages in the district. The Merchant Shipping and Underwriters’ Association report the arrival at London, on October Bth, of the ship Brisbane, from Timaru, which left on June 11th, Oct. 9. Nothing definite has transpired with regard to the decision of the Great Powers for the settlement of the Montenegrin question and the cession of Dul—cigno. On the strength of the proposals made by England, Admiral Seymour summoned the other admirals of the combined fleet to hold a conference. It is reported that a detachment oi the squad ron are going to the Levant, accompanied by a troop-ship, to render assistance, taking munitions of War and Gatling guns. The counties of Galway and Mayo, Ireland, have been proclaimed disturbed districts. Constantinople, Oct. 8. 11 is s°id that a plot is on foot against the Sultan, and in consequence, several arrests have been made ; it is, however, understood the Sultan prefers abdicating to yielding.
