TEMUKA RACES.

On Thursday last the Temuka annual race meeting took place in a paddock north of the town, and kindly lent for the occasion by Mr John Paterson. The morning looked anything but propitious, nevertheless a large crowd were early astir, determined—wet day or dry day—to make the best of it... Vehicles of all sorts were in requisition, and after a primer at the hotels, a start was made for the course. The Temuka Brass Band, for the first time since it 3 formation, added much to the enjoyment of the meeting. A good number of ladies also put in an appearance. There being no horses from a distance, Lonehand, as was expected, carried off the lion's share of the prizes. This, however, is better than last year, when all the money was pocketed by strangers. The usual motly gathering of blacklegs with their games of chance, or rather no chance at all, were on the ground, but were but moderately patronised. The booths, as usual, were fairly patronised, and more enjoyment seemed to be taken out of the gathering than was at first expected, the day clearing up as the afternoon advanced By six o'clock all was over The hurdle race was a gift to Lonehand, who had only nominal company in Robin Hood The former horse is destined to make a name for himself if properly managed The following are the results :
