MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board’s Office, Peel Forest, on Friday, the 20th instant. Members prerent—Messrs C. G. Tripp (chairman pro tern), J. Henry, Mackay, and Wilson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS The lenders for the various works were opened and considered. No 25 contract —Shingling Blair's road. CORRESPONDENCE The following correspondence was read and considered :
From Mr J. Talbot drawing the attention of the Board to some damage done to the road leading to his Lind on the Raincliff Downs by water scour, and asking to have the remaining portion of the formed road metalled as soon us possible ; also asking the Board to continue the formation of the road along the top of the spur, and suggesting the necessi'y of having a new line of road laid off connecting the road in the Middle Valley with the road on top of the spur Mr Talbot waited on the Board explaining the matters referred to; Resolved— ‘ Thai tenders be invited for metalling the present formed road and for forming the Spur road from trig 143 to the SouthEast boundary of section 20226, and the overseer to 'ay iff a line of road near the
Bain cliff middle fence, connecting the two roads. ’
From Mr J. W. Jones calling the attention of the Board to tiie state of the crossing in the RainclifF creek and to the rough metal on the K-kahu and Burke’s Pass road. The o . erseer explained that the new road at present being formed would avoir! the crossings of the creek, and that the metal on the upper part of the road is now broken.
From Mr Gr.ffin asking the Board to shingle the short length of road leading to his section. The work was ordered to be done.
From Mr H. Lord requesting permission to enclose a gravel reserve adjoining his section, also asking the Board to make a crossing over a drain on the Orari Gorge read. Permission was granted for fencing the reserve, subject to agateway being left were required, and the overseer was instructed to attend to the drains. From Messrs Jameson and Roberts, Ashburton, enclosing a price list of drain pipes. The Clerk was directed to reply, stating that the Board has compared the prices and find them slightly in excess of that paid at present for the same descrip tion of pipes. From the Hon. J. B. Acland requesting leave of absence extending over the next meeting of the Board. The request was granted. From the same with reference to the Rangitata truffle bridge, and the stopping of the express train at the Rangitata Sta. tion. The Clerk was requested to acknowledge the receipt of the same with thanks. From Mr A. Simpson enclosing a price list of stationery.
From tlie Chief Surveyor stating that application would be forwarded to the Commissioner of Crown Lands for a gravel reserve at the east corner of section 31990. From the same in reference to certain reserves numbered wong in the district map.
From the manager Mount Peel Station asking permission to take sods off the road reservo for the purpose of erecting a fence. Granted. From the Geraldine Road Board asking the co-operation of the Board in protesting against a rate being struck by the Geraldine County Council for the purpose of erecting a bridge over the Opihi river.
From the same in reply to the Board’s application for sharing the cost of forming a short length of the boundary road, and stating that the Geraldine Board sees no necessity for doing the work applied for. The Clerk was directed to reply, and state that the Board, having already expended a large sum of money in forming and mettaling a road entirely in the Geraldine district, considejs it very ungracious and unfriendly on the part of the Geraldine Board in refusing to share the cost of forming the short length of road applied for. From J. Gregon making application for the Board to pay the man’s wages employed in spreading the gravel on his contract. The application was refused. W. Kennedy waited on the Board asking to have his deposit on No 24 contract returned. Refused. The Clerk was directed to write to the Chief Surveyor, requesting that gravel reserve, No 1805, be altered from the north-east of section 23522 to the southeast corner of the same section the owner being agreeable to the alteration. NEW WORKS. Resolved that tenders be invited for the following works ; —(1) installing Talbot’s road ; (2) forming Spur road, Raincliff; (3) shingling from Mount Michael valley to Fairlie Creek ; (4) shing'ing Mount Michael valley road ; (5) cutting and forming at Sherwood Downs; (6) shingling Opuha Gorge road; (7) forming near Rangitata terrace ; (8) forming from Scotsburn to Sowerby’s road ; (9) shingling Griffin’s road ; (10) forming bridle track to Forest creek. The Overseer was directed to get trees and have all the reserve already prepared planted. ACCOUNTS. After passing accounts to the amount of L 921 3s 2d, the meeting adjourned.
