Chbibtchubch, Aug. 13th. The libel case of Izet, editor of the Star t . the proprietors of the Echo, has been fixed for August 23rd. Lake's station, situate on the south bank of the Hurunui, and comprising 20,000 acres and 8000 sheep, has been sold for about half what it was changed hands for four years ago. Archibald Wilson overseer on the West Coast road, was committed for trial to day for stealing £247 8s from the Government, substantial bail being allowed. A man named Prideaux fell over the cliff at the dock works at Lyttelton some time during the night, and broke his neck- He had been drinking for some days, and must have climbed over a fence before he could fall over the precipice. This morning a man named Thomas Daley was brought from Eakaia suffering from fracture of the right leg, received, according to his own account, under somewhat singular circumstances. Daley, who is in the employ of Mr Storey, of Eakaia, states that he was driving along the road last night, seated on the top of a loaded dray, when a man with a mask on suddenly sprang out from a fence as if to attack him. Daley says he then jumped off the dray and in doing so slipped and fell in the front of the wheel, which passed over him, breaking his right leg below the knee and inflicting a cut on the other leg. The man with the mask then ran away. Daley was picked by some persons came came to the spot, and his injuries attended to. Auckland, Aug. 14th. At the inquest on Duncan Livingstone, who died from the effects of an accident at the railway station at Papakura, a verdict of accidental death was returned. A rider wasadded that no blame was attachable to any railway offiicials. The evidence showed that the deceased had been drinking, and being prevented on that account boarding an upcountry train for his home ,at Pukekohe. He had after da~k lain down between the station and the rail to sleep, and was awoke by the passing down of a goods train, which did not stop at the station. The Southern Cross, from Levuka, brings news that H.M.S. Wolverine arrived in Levuka on the sth inst. from Tavuina.- She struck on a reef on the north-east end of; Graro. She is said to be considerably damaged, and had six feet of water m the hold, and is reported to be making three feet per hour. Of the three men who were drowned at Dargaville, T. "J. Wilson and Wm Allwrighfc had both filled up proposals for insurance in the New Zealand Ascident Insurance Company some months ago, but had failed to pay the premiums thereon. Negotiations are stated to be on the eve of completion for the purchase of Newton Kirk and Manse, for £15,000 by the Eoman Catholics, for Father Sullivan and other Benedictine priests who are expected to .arrive shortly. * . A new society's journal "The Observer', is to be published here early in September. It is to be conducted on the lines of the wellknown society journals at Home, which have been so successful, and-will be illustrated with portraits of colonial celebrities, and caricatures of well-known local-worthies. Mr Ireland,' M.H.B. for Waikaia, died at 7 o'clock this morning. He had been ailing for some-time, but "was in the House on Thursday. The same night he consulted his medical ad-riser, and on the following day was taken seriously ill, and has been confined to bed since. The supposed cause of death was heart disease and congestion of the lungs.
