MILFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting was held on August 9, 1880. Present: Messrs Cox (Chairman), Woodhead, Woodleigh, Wardell, May, Colville, andßrogden. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence read :
1 Circular addressed to Headmaster relating to ‘attendance returns/ in which inaccuracies are said to be of common occurrence; explaining that, as teachers
salaries are calculated on the fastis of the (working average) attendance, it is imperative that the returns should be accurate, and that henceforth any case of incorrectness or discrepancy in the said returns will entail a delay of at least a fortnight in the payment of salary. 2 Tnat £7 10s had been paid to credit of Committee for incidental expense 3 for quarter ending September 30 8 Circular calling attention to clause 83 of the Act prohibiting children under five years of uge from attending public schools, pointi -- g out that such prohibition will probably have the effect of reducing the income of Committees, and stating that the attendance of scholars outside school age is not opposed to the expressed inten tions of Government
4 That £l4 15s had been paid to credit for teachers’ salaries for July 5 From the Board intimating that Mr Craig, headmaster, had sent in his resignation, and that the Chairman had accepted the same 6 Letter from Mr Craig in relation to resignation.
7 From the Board enclosing, for the consideration of the Committee, three applications for the office of headmaster, viz, Mr E. Mossman, Ashburton; Mr J. H, Hewlyn, East Oxford; Win. Wilkins, Christchurch ; and urging the Chairman to call an early meeting of the Committee to make a selection and recommendation. The Committee unanimously resolved to recommend for appointment Mr E. Mossman 8 From Mr Mclntosh, headmaster of Temuka School, certifying that Edmund and Ellen Breakwell, living in the school district of Milford, are in attendance at the Temuka district school 9 Letter from Mr Craig complaining of insubordination and ill-behaviour on the part of the school boys on the road home from school; and reporting that he had expelled an offender in consequence of what had happened in his hearing a day or two previously The following accounts were ordered to be paid : —H. Hodgson 12s ; W. B. Craig £2 6s Bd.
The Chairman reported that he had inquired into the case referred to in Mr Martin Dimn’s letter. After some d!s cession thereon, the Committee resolved to take no further action in relation to it.
