TEMUKA SCHOOL.

)The Tonuika School Committee met on Tuesday last. Present—Messrs Wilson (Chairman) Story, Hooper, Russell, Gray Brown.

The minutes of former meeting were read and confirmed.

Letter road from the Board of Education in reference to keeping back children from the School that are unde rage. .Resolved—" That the letter lie over for future consideration."

From the same advising payment of L 59 -is lOd teacher's salaries for month of July. From the same in reference to an error in the amount remitted for Miss Math ia's salary for month July, and stating that amount short would be made up with August payment, advising to acquaint Miss Mathirs with the the same.' Resolved—" That the Chairman explain the matter to Miss Mathias." From the Headmasters. Report for month ending July, showing number on the Roll. Boys 166, girls 156, total 322. Avorage daily attendance, boys 109, girls 9-4; total 203. Highest attendance, July 19th, boys 125, girls 107 ; total 232. Number of children on the roll under age 31. Signed A. Mcintosh, Headmaster. A statement also accompanied the report pointing out the irregular attendance, and giving certain names as requiring to be dealt with uuder the compulsory clause. The Chairman explained the cause of the delay in not summonsing some of the delinquents, and said he would immediately summons any which the committee might

elect from the list beforS them. Six were selected forthwith. Certificate from Dr Cumming was read stating that Miss Birtha Brown's state of health is such that she require a month's relief from wort. Granted. It was here observed, however, that part of the time had already passed. A letter was read from the Steward of Reserves complaining that the Committee had interfered with one Moore who had leased the Educational Reserve 1819, included in sections 187, 189, 191, 193,193,197 in Wilkin street, and 194, 196 and 198 in llayner street, and asking what right the School Committee had to these sections.

The Chairman stated that immediately on receipt of the letter he instructed the secretary to bok up any correspondence on the subject. After doing so he thought it advisable to bring the matter before the Committee. He wished to state now that duriug the time (he thought it was when Mr Montgomery was Chairman of the then Canterbury Board of Education) he had, with the concurrence of the School Committee (of whom he was Chairman) written the Chairman that as certain sections were in the market for sale, it would be advisable fo" the Board to buy them in, as all the then sections, as well as the reseive, would soon be required for school purposes. The Chairman of the Board had done so, and wrote back saying that the reserve and sections named were s;cured for the Temuka School. It was resolved that the Chairman and Mr Gray look into the matter, and write to the Stews rt of Reserves.

A letter from the Board slating'that Mr Smith having failed to pass his examination, the Board would like to know if the Committee were satisfied with Mr Smith's work, and if the Committee is willing to give him another trial. It was, on the motion of Mr Story, seconded by Mr Brown, resolved that the "matter stand over till next month, and that Mr Smith, in the interim, send any information he may possess on the subject to the Committee, and also that the Headmaster be asked to give his opinion on the mutter in writing to the Commttlee before the matter again comes up.

The remainder of the meeting was taken up with matters connocted with the children's concert. The proeee s from the eoncert amounted to £ll lis Gd ; expenses £3 13s 6cl, leaving a balance of £7 18a to go to the prize fund.
