The Great Powers have declined theproposal made by Turkey to re-open the, question of the rectification of the Greek, frontier.
Aug. 2
The Right Hon W, E. Gladstone issuffering from slight congestion of the lungs, with feverish symptons. To-day being a Bank holiday, all the: markets are closed. Government have recalled Sir BailieFrere from, the Governorship of Cape Colony. The Right lion Mr Gladstone is progressing favorably.
The cricket match Australians versus Gloucestershire County team, at Clifton,, was commenced to-day. The attendance at the match was very fine thronghoutthe day. The Australians went in first and were all out for 110 runs, McDonnell being caught for 42 runs. The Home team then went in for their first innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had lost six w.ckets for 120 runs. , i

The illness of the Right Hon Mr Gladstone has caused great excitement in England and abroad. He still continues to improve, but it is believed he will be unable lo attend the House of Commons for the remainder of the session.

The French Military Commission, which was to have proceeded to reorganise the Greek army, has been abandoned .
Calcutta, Aug. 2,
According to the latest news from Afghanistan, Ayoub Khan is quiescent, and has not taken any steps to follow up his victory . General Burrows continues his defensive measures, and has brought all his infantry to Candahar.
Evening. The telegraph line has been cut between the Indian frontier and Cabul. Aug. 8.
Further details are to hand regarding the attack made on General Burrows at Candahar by Yakoub Khan's forces. 20 officers and 400 British troops, with 800 friendly natives, have been killed and wounded.
