There is an old saying that when “Poverty comes in at tho.door, Love flies out at the window.” That this is not always the case was proved (says the Mi.ruing Herald,) last week at the famous Mnllocky Gully. A gentleman, e gaged there at 28s per week, was the happy father of three girls. One of them fell in love with a twenty-one shilling man, and agreed to he his for better or worse But as the course of true love does not uow'run smooth, the father objected, and the match was broken off. Nothing daunted, the young lady cast about for another lover, and found one in the person of a brave Italian immigrant. This time the lady resolved not to give her stern parent the chance of saying nay; so one day last week she disappeared from the “ unemployed section,” and is now doubtless enjoying the honeymoon with her partner from the sunny South, leaving her disconsolate father to comfort himself for his loss by an extra allowance of beei\ Who would have thought to find so much romance at Mnllocky Gully.
Mr Wakekeld M.H.R. for the district, passed through Temuka for the south on Thursday. In connection with thi 3 gentleman, the following from the “ O.D. Times” Wellington correspondent may explain the cause of our members’ absence from the Empire City:—“ The presentation of the report of the Royal Commission on Local Industries has been fiuthet and indefinitely postponed. It was expected to bo sent in last week, but this anticipation has not been realised, and now the Chairman (Mr Wakefield) has gone to Christchurch on another Govern-
ment commission.”
