COMMERCIAL.
Dunedin, Friday evening. The amount of Customs Revenue received to-day on goods entered for consumption was £757 6s 7d.
THE LABOUR MARKET,
Mr Skene reports ; —The usual winter quietness prevails, the demand fluctuating with the weather. There are at last symptons of a revival in business : a slight move in the price of produce, and a decided rise in mutton and beef. All these combined should bring some heart and confidence to the farmers. Sheep farmers complain as much as the small arable farmers of their inability to employ as many bands as usual, notwithstanding the decided vise in the price of wool, Dunedin trade is unsteady, labourers and tradesmen do not get regular work in winter, and what they do get is poorly remunerated. Female servants, farm hands, milkers, rabbiters, couples, bushmen, station cooks, and hotel hands are always needed.
COMMERCIAL TELEGRAM.
Auckland, July 9th.
Business is steady, but sluggish. Considerable consignments to the South Sea Islands are being made, Canterbury potatoes, £3 10s to £3 15s (bags included) ; oats, stationary, at 2s to 2s 3d per bushel. The money market is unchanged. Another rise in Union Sasli and Door Company’s shares has taken place, and they are quoted at £6 ss. New Zealand Insurance have risen to L 3. The mining exchange is not so crowded with excited speculators as it ,vas a week ago. A wild panic occurred on Mo l day when it became known that a breaking down had taken place in the Kurumii with a disappointin' resuit, and shares fell at least. 25 per cent, in an hour. The drop in the Kurumii affected the value of other mining properties, and all dropped. The effect of this sudden shrinkage in value has in a great measure worn off, and an advance movement has taken place.
