TEMUKA BRASS BAND.
On Thursday evening the Temuka Brass Band had a- rehearsal in' the Volunteer iHall; wMfcn'a'gcJod I mtister took place. The band numbers twenty-one members in all. Although only about three mouths in existence, the execution of he various pieces were marv.ellously> correct;- Good time andharmony testified to the industry ofthe band-master, Mr Hadfield. It is but justice to that gentleman to state that he knows his business, and must hare been indefatigable in'his exertions, or*' he could'not have mado such a creditable appearance with his pupils as he did on Thursday right. Considering that only oi e or two had practised on wind ins rii'ments previous to the organisation" 1 of'tlie company, the* prdgr&ss made by it is far beyofid'or/r most sanguine expectations. At one time we complained that the attendance was very irregular ; this was only 'what might have been e p cted. The difficulties connected with handlings arid sounding some of these intricate musical machines are ra'her discouraging at first. The company has now got over this, and ithe pleasure always evinced by dtudents of music is now displayed by our amateurs Daily practice, however, is necessary for success.
For such a small community as ours the undertaking of a brass band was a bold ona. First, of all, willing volunteers had to 'be f6nfid ; then instruments had to be procured, and this latter part meant money. The instruments were got, costing from L9O to LIOO. As volunteers and instruments were useless wittout an instructor, .one had to be got. .We think the company was fortunate in securing the services of Mr Hadfield, as he not only does hfa dtrty-'well, but he seems to throw his heart and soul into his business. This latter engagement also involves an expenditure of money, therefore it was a plucky undertaking for Temukaites to enter upon. A. weekly subscription frommembers is all the income that yet exists j shall we, then, allow the mSmbWs'to devote their-time and money for our enjoyment, acknowledge it, and not substantially? We hope not. On Thursday wuek, July 22, the band purpose giving an opening concert in Hall, when we hope not only the inhabitants of the township, but others at a distance, will it a point to attend. The'band is thetonly one in the district ;■• the summer months are at hand, when pic-nics- and dinner parties are all the ' rage ; their services will enliven ■' the proceedings, and make the hearts merry of those present. Indeed, we do not see why the Temftka rl3rass Brad should n6t become as'f mied for sweet and cheering music as is the Invercargill Brass Band, winch is so favorably spoken of. Temuka is not devoid of Imusioal talent. - It has often afforded us pleasure to record vocal performances ; on the forthcoming occasion there is" no chance of disappointment, and we expect every lady'arid gentleman amongst us are prepared to do their duty by attending the performance of our Brasaßalid on the 22nd inst. ; EIST OF PERFORMERS and instruments.
