PRESENTED AT COURT.
The following extract from a homoreij ous articles in the April number of, lhe| Times will give an idea of the through which ladies have to pass being first presented at Court: —“ We|
, yourself minutely informed and in ; structed in the particulars ot the cere mony which you have to go through in being presented to the Queen ; and that you have practised, over and over ©gain the very difficult part of curtsey ing and kissing the Royal hand at the same moment. Do not for one instant let yourself be persuaded that you would be able to learn your ‘ role ’ at the-time of the presentation by seeing some one else go through the performance in front cf you ; it is fifty to one against your coming next to another ‘debutante, or being able to see what she do s, even* if it so happens. Not to know what to dOon such an occasion, or to fail to' go propierl/ through your’ act of Homage, is, howev.er unintentionally, a want of proper.. respect to Her Majesty. It happens constantly that ladiesj ’ from either not knowing what" to do, or from sheer nirvousness rush past the Queen without either kiss or curtsey, and have to be brought back in dire confusion, embarrasment, and misery. The ceremony you have to perform is this ; the moment that you find yourselt in front of the Queen, you make a step forward, and raise your ‘ ungloved' right hand and arm bent outwards from your tody towards .Her Majesty, who will place her hand upon .it. You then cuftsey very low, kissing the Royal hand ■fit the same instant. After that you .curtsey low to the. Princess .of. Wales, who-stands immediately next the Queen ; ■- and again to the othe r Royal Princesses and Princes Then you retire, remembering, if you can, to keep your right - shoulder forward, so as not to turn your • back on Royalty.”
