THE KELLY GANG.
Melbourne. June 28 Nod Kelly, the murderer of the three constables, has just been captured by the police. The others of (he parly since their appearance at Helmtopo! have bailed up a public house in the neighbourhood. Their capture is expected to be made during to-day. Monday in.- ruing. Tim man who was mi'-deivd by the Kelt vs et Seba lopoi on (Saturday was named Hii-writt. a selector and farmer, and associate of die Kelly gang. He was recently employed by the police four of whom were secreted in a house near the scone of the tragedy. Byrne and the Kellys compelled a German acquaintance to call Sherritt outside when Byrne instantaneously killed him, out of revenge. The police then appeared and summoned the three outlaws to surrender, which they refused to do. The Kellys then fired a volly at the police, and attempted to burn down the house in which they were secreted. They remained outside the house till morning, and th-n disappeared The police were inactive, and their explan ationsare regarded as unsatisfactory. As soon as morning dawned the outlaws rode off to Beechworth. In the morning the black trackers reported that tne Kellys had been seen at Muichison. It is rumoured that the pursuing party have engaged with the outlaws and that one the pursuers has been wounded. Lat r. The police have surrounded the Kellys at Jones’ Hotel at Glenrowau, 7o miles jrom the scene of the outrage at Sebastopol. Superintendent Hare is wounded in the arm. The gang have torn up rails near Glenrowau ahead of the special train conveying a reinforcement of police, but wore unsuccessful in stopping the train. Ned Kelly is wounded. Two children have been shot in one the encounters with the gang-. The fighting is stilll going on. There is intense excitement over the events. Monday afternoon. The following partic lavs of the capture of Ned Kelly are ; o hand ; Twenty-five civil bans h d been hailed up by the Kellys when the police arrivedThis was at tluee o’clock this morning, bnt fighting ni once commenced. , N- <i Kelly took to the h sh shortly after, but returned at daylight and again entered info the fray with his mates. I'hey fought hard, but Ned Kelly received a shot in the groin, and was captured. The rest of the gang then made off. One of the hlacktrackers received a graso on the head in the encounter . A later telegram to the Melbourne Exchange states that Ned Kelly is lying at Glenrowau station mortally wounded. Jones’ Hote , which is close to the station, is occupied by Dan Kelly, Hart, Byrne, and all the civilhans at the station who were bailed up. Later telegrams state that Byrne is dead, and all the civilians have been released by the nui’aws. Dau Kelly and Hart still oc upv the hotel. Incessant shots taking place between them and the
police, but it is expected they will snrl render to-day . The breastplates worn I by the gang consist of ploughshares. 1 Sebastopol, the scene of Sherritt’s murder, is in the Ovens district. Glenrowan, where the fighting took place, is midway between Benalla and ratta. ■ ■ N Melbourne, June 28th - Owing to the outlaws htill continuing resistance, the police fired the hotel, which was burned down. The charred remains of Hart and Dan Kelly were found, and the armoured bodies of Byrne and Clatterey were recovered. Glittery is reported to be belonging to a Bemdla paper. Two children and a hotelkeeper were slightly wounded. The civilians were prisoners the whole of Sunday, and the platelayers were compelled by the gang to destroy the railway. Ned Kelly has been taken to Benalla. June 29. There is little fresh regarding yesterday’s events at Glenrowan. Ned Kelly has in all thirteen wounds, and eighteen shots struck his armor. Dan Kelly md Hart were, its said,burnt after death, but it is not certain whether they committed suicide, or were shot, by the police. Later. Ned Kelly has reached Melbourne, and is. progressing favourably. Flesh wounds have only been found, which are not likely to prove fa f al. A child belonging to Jones, hotelkeeper at Glenrowan, where the affray took place i dead.
