A SAGACIOUS DOG.

The following story-was forwarded to u» by an old resident of Gapes’ Gul y ; —A few days ago, Mrs Hall, of Hilton, left her house to go and see her husband who was working a short distance away in the Kakahu River. Not intending to be away more than 10 minutes, she left her child at home, asleep. On returning home Mrs Hall discovered that her child was absent ; she at once told her husband oi their loss, and he, thinking that the child had fallen into one of the waterholes so numerous near where he is working, searched them, expecting every moment to see him lying at the bottom of one of the holes. After a fruitless search of about two hours, Mr and Mrs Hall returned home, both convinced that their child was dead. Soon after reaching their abode, Mr Hall's dog entered the house, and evinced a desire tor his master to follow him by whining and pulling at his coat-tails,and would not keep still until Mr Hall went with him. The sagacious animal led the way for about two miles, when they came upon a small valley, and there Mr Hall discover d the truant, driving several cattle before him, an 1 going in the opposite direction of home. The feelings of Mr Hall can bo more easily imagined than described, and t e dog seemed pleased on the finding of the child. Probably, through the sagacity of his dog, Mr Hall’s child was saved from an untimely death by starvation and cold.
