PUBLIC MEETING RE PROPERTY TAX
A public meeting to protest against the Property Tax was held in the Volunteer Hall last i ight It was largely attended, over 400"pernons being present, nearly all of whom were electors Mr Talbot was in the chair Aft.* a short address, lie enlled upon Mr Mendelson to propose the first resolu tion, which he did in a lengthy speech as follows—That tin's m etieg i« of opinion that th • Property Tax inun air u priucip'e and. will prove disastrous to (he interests of New Zealand, apart from an objection ai)le feature in the Act —Every legitimate' settler wi:l have to pay Id in the £, whi* cipit-dints and companies will only pay a fraction of a penny The ri solution was seconded by Mr Gray, and •-•arri-id unanimously Mr Wilson moved—That this meeting is of opinion that the Property Tax should be repea ed, and that a Land and luc-ome fax should be substituted in its place Mr Wood seconded the motion Mr Badham pro. osed as an amendment That in lieu of the Propert)' Tax should be reimpose the tea and sugjir duty, and impose 6d per gallon on be«r. and to return to the old Provincial educati. nil system, and to do away with subsidies uo local bodies Mr Gray seconded th© amendment rro forma The amendment was put to the meeting and declared lost Tjie resolution wpb put and carried unanimously Mr Gray moved that a copy of the fore going resolutions be Kent to our membei asking hioi to support Sir George Grey in getting the Property Tax repealed Mr Lee seconded the motion An amendment was proposed by Dr J. S. Hayes, and seconded by Mr Mendelson, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to our member, requesting him to give them his support The amendment was put and declared lost, and the motion was carried unani mously The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks 10 the Chairman
