A crowded meeting, held last night, adopted resolutions denouncing certain clauses in the new Licensing Bill, which are calculated to suppress Sunday lectures. The Hon. Mr Bowie Wilson was in the chair, and Mr David Buchanan, M. L. A., Mr Charles Bright fie Free'bought lecture, and the Rev, J . Bowie spoke at the meeting. G. R. Dibhs, defendant in the great slander case, has been arrested and his furniture attached for payment of Shep herd’s costs. Melbourne. May 7. Arrived-—Union Company’s steamship Taiaroa, from Bluff. The barque Binenden. which arrived from Java with serious cases of thvor on board, has been placed in quarantine. A bottle has been found on the beach at Portland containing a paper signed “ John Webster,” and dated February 25th, 1880, stating that the ship Knowsley Hall was wrecked on the Crczets ; ti.at all on board perished except three, who are destitute, and subsisting on fish . It is l>elieved to be a hoax . Brisbane, May 8. A meeting was held here yesterday for the purpose of starting a Meat Freezing Company, towards which L 50,000 has already been subscribed.
