Auckland, April 29. The case Smith v. Palmer, an action to recover L3OOO damages for breach of contract, has closed in the Supreme Court. The jury awarded one farthing damages. Sir George Grey Grey is expected from Kawau next Tuesday, and will address a meeting at the Theatre Royal. A gixl named Annie Wallace, aged three years and five months, has been fatally burnt at Hind. In reply to a deputation of northern settlers, the Attorney-General promised that the Government • will offer facilities for vine culture by setting apart an area of land for the purpose and aiding any special'settleiiient for vine-growing. A company has been formed with a capital of L 4500 to purchase a section of land outside of Christchurch East for at recreation ground, to which an entrance fee can be charged. This, will be let to a new cricket club, and used for all kinds of gatherings, athletic principally. It is expected to prove a great success, and will bo a great help to the game of cricket.
