OUR MELBOURNE LETTER.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Melbourne, March 11. Now that the elections are over, we have to a great degree settled down to business once more. The House is not to meet«ill the 11th of May, which will give the Ministry .ample time to a.tnmge and settle upon the policy they intend to pursue. I’m happy to say that the Ministry is in every respects a good one, and will do their duty straightforwardly. Tiie Opposition Press has been very severe on the Hon J, Service, for having elected Mr Brent to the position of minister of public works, they they accuse him of being unreliable. Now to all reasonable men who have Cirefully watched the hon gentleman (Mr Bent) during the term of his parliamentary career, one tiling is certain, and that is he will do his level best for the working classes, and to my mind he is admir»blely suito 1 for tne post to which Ire Ims been elected. Mr H. Sunweel’s an emminent coach builder of our city has invented a now cab which he calls the “Two-wheeled Brougham.” It is a rut improvement on the wretched vehicles which have for so many years been used in Melbourne. Tnere is no doubt ihat these cabs will soon be in general use. At the Police Court last week a boarding house keeper named Mrs Siptrott was fined for h iving broken open the box of a-lady Jodg'T. The bench spoke in the seven's! possible manner of her conduct, and cautioned her to bo more careful in future. A well kno\yn solicitor (Mr Boy) in Melbourne, charged a man .named McKenzie yesterday at the city court wiih having used threatning language. McKenzie in defence stated that Mr Roy had robbed him of £6OOO. The bencli ordered him to find securities in trtfo amounts of £25 each, to keep the peace for three months, Mr F P Bailliere, the publisher of Collins Street, has just issued a small work; entitled “ Civilization without Delusion ” It contains an article which appeared in the Victorian Be view of November last, (by Marcus Clarke) also a reply, from the pen of the Bight Bcv the Bishop of Melbourne, which appeared in the same'publication of December It concludes witk a letter to His Lordship, the Anglican Bishop of Melbourne, by Marcus Clarke, which was sent to the Melbourne Beview, but was suppressed by the publisher 'The above work has caused much excitement, and lias been bought by thousands of persons
