A SINGULAR DISCOVERY.
A singular discovery of gold, which may, perhaps, lead to important results was made a few days ago in Welliogton. On Saturday last Mr Gr. Edmonds, a well known retired master mariner, purchased at Mr M’Lean’s auction mart, on Lambton quay, three live ducks, One of them he killed on Monday, and proceeded to dress it himself. On opening and washing the gizzard Mr Edmonds fancied he heard something clink in the basin. Examining the water he found two small pieces of dull yellow metal al oat twice the size of a pin’s head. A closer search brought to light fivo more peices of similar, description. They all present a solid waterworn appearance. The whole S'M ea may weigh possibly one pennyweight. Mr Edmonds submitted the metal to experienced persons, who at once pronounced it to he gold of a very good quality. Of cours ■>, the questions which immediately suggested itselt was,
where die the clucks come from : Mr- - T ' M’Lean. it anpears received tlr-m from M essrs Parsons and Max ton’s poultry-. • breeding establishment at Brighwater Nelson. Mr Parsons has been informed of the discovery which is beyon i doubt of gourdne character, and, it is mdi-r----stood, w'll at once take to prospecting the crook which runs through the pro- • Tvr.'w. At present no gold has been ■ discovered in thc local'ty, but there are j goldfields at no groat distance, Sli uld this circumstance lead to amw rueh, it - woo’d not be ugnrecedented in tlie annals * of the goldfields of the Colour, for, if / we ar- not mistaken, a som-what simi- / hu’ find in a duck’s gizzard led to ■ ho-/ dis<:.’e y of the Tareri goldfields, in Utago.
