BAD FOR THE COLONIES.
The Pall Mall Gazette has the following :—" The Chinese Gorernmant A.e very active just now. In every - direction they are making treaties and looking sharply after the interest* of ! their countrymen. The last arrange ment of which news has come is with the Sandwich Islands. There are many Chinese coolies in the group, and some have done exceedingly wolJ there. But some, on the other hand, have notbeen well treated. Skilled artisans men who had come out with a promue of being employed at good wages in I their own trade, have been turned to ' ordinary field work. On this and similar .natters the Chinese Government | will in future have something to say. | But the Chinese seem to be teaching m a lesson. The Sand wish Islands occupy a most important position iu the North 'Pacific Ocean; we are one of tj|gg guaranteeing Powers; yet we let American contract a reciprocity treaty there which will end in their complete control unless we are. very : careful, and meanwhile enab e tkem to shut out our goods altogether. And it m -.y be well to bear in mind that some day or another —not many years hence, in the opinion of men who hav\j a light to express one —the trade between Cninft, Japan, and British North America, perhaps also twtween British North -America and the Australia colonies, will be considerable."
