Temur a Lb.’dee Office, Friday eveuinig AnoTirr wi-k of unsettled weather has retarded the progress cf gathering in the fruits of ihe earth. On Wcdnes l ay last it rained heavily, and al ! hough Thursday and yesterday the sun shone through the day, as nighi c one on rain again c, me with it. This wid not only spoil the sample of the laie barley, but’ will also injure atliP samples of wh at ia tin- field. Grain deliveries have ' «• n going on more freelv, xml the hands ai the Railway Sta-iiion-havc been kept moderate:*’ busy. I Prices’have : <ji inq roved, but rather otherwise Prime wheat, delivered at the ■ Arowhenna, Tertinka, or Wi; Chester Rail- • way .Stations, 3s 3d ; barley, best samples, • 3s ; oats are unsaleable at Is. Romo sales of store sheep in the. district ; have realised good prices. This is .-wirg - partly to the abundance of feed in every I part of the district. ~ Store cattle are still unsaleable, : and fat ony 20s to 21s per cwt. Pigs are in great demand at extremely ’ highprices.. This is the o ly live stock - that will pry this season, as she p farmers have had tobuy at high prices, and at the pri-e of fat stock can realise no profit. • There is one. ray of hope, however, for stockowners ; the present season has been r a most unusually bad on* forS'>utliland, and sheep, has been short through the whole of ■ the summer Fat stock is consequently . scarce. As Southland supplies Dunedin lo a consider:.b’e extern, the deficiency - will leave an opening for Caet-rbury farmers to take, advantage of for much of ” In r surplus fat stock. At Oamam wet weather has checked
threshing from the stock, and much of the stock still remains <x;os“d to the w-atln r.
Altogether, it will not bo vmy profitable to-(];/■ rrrain-grow’ug farmer, and to the graziers it will be nn undoubted loss.
