False Reasoning. Mr Gla lst<me, speaking tiie other day at the University of Glasgow, told his audience that in discussing the actions of those who had lived in by-gone ages regard must be had to the circumstances of their limes ; it would not be just, he said, to judge Queen Elizabeth the standards applicable to Queer. Victoria, and Pope St. Gregory VII must not be denounced as an aggressor upon civil authority without due consideration of the violence, lawlessness, and fraud, of those who should have been the guardians law and right*
“ Had."—An amusing story, told of a trick played by Archibald Forbes on two of his brother “ specials,” for the purpose of getting exclusive information on a matter of great public interest, is given in the Printer's Register. The three were waiting at Plymouth one night for the arrival of the survivors of an emigrant ship which had been destroj'ed by fire. They played billiards to while away the time. Suddenly Forbes said he was ill, and must go to bed. The others went on playing, till at last one of them said he felt ill too, whereupon the third discovered that he himself was indisposed. The fact was that it had suddenly struck them that the ingenious Forbes had stolen a march upon them. Tney rushed down to the harbour to find that he had chartered a tug and set off to meet the expected vessels. They got an other tug, and, accompanied by a crowd of ravenous journalists, started in pursuit. When they boarded the ship, they found the redoubtable “special ” in a very warlike mood. It is even said (though this is probably an embellishment) that he took off his coat, and offered to fight the whole company. It is a pity the combat did not take place, for an account of it, appended to Mr Forbes’ graphic description of the sufferings of the emigrants, in the Daily News next day, wonU have been very impressive.
Munich. —The most cultivated city in modern Europe, for every form of art, literature, and science, is Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Students from all quarters of the globe fill its colleges, lecture halls, and art galleries. And yet Munich is the chief city of a Catholic city in the world. How does Joseph Cook explain this ? Concert at Geraldine. —On Tuesday evening last a concert and ball was given to raise funds for the man McKenzie, who met with an accident in (he Waihi Bush. To make the affair a success Mr Gapes took tho drum and fife band up, who paraded tho town till the concert commenced, which was a decided success, although it would have been a great improvement had a more efficient pianist been obtained. After the concert was concluded the crowd dispersed for a short time to clear tho room for the ball, which was kept up till “ daylight did appear,’’ when all returned home, thoroughly satisfied with tho enjoyable time they had
spent. Woman Again Defeated —Although women voted in Boston on election day, the female candidates for the school committee were defeated. Whether lovely woman votes or dresses herself, it is not to please men so much as to spite other women.
Sale— Mr K F Gray held a most successful sale of Mr Martin Dunn’s stock ajnd land on Wednesday last A good attendance, spirited bidding and first-class prices was the order of day
Canada. —There is said to be a strong feeling in Canada in favour of cutting loose from England, and setting up an independent government. In the Domain there are 1,500,C0 French, 500,000 Irish, 250,000 Americans, 250,000 Germans, and about 2,500,000 English and Scottish Canadian born citizens and immigrants. Tho Toronto Globe says tho uneasiness is caused by a desire for annexation to tho United States.
Universities, Joseph Cook’s pet authority, the “ Statesman’s Year Book,” credits Italy with 21 universities, whick is more than double the number of Prussia ; and a single Italian university, that of Naples, with 9,459 students, or as many as all the Protestant universities of Prussia put together. But Cook, in his last lecture held up Protestant Prussia as a shining light for Popish Italy.
