THE NIHILIST AGITATION.
The usually well-informed St Petersburg correspondent of the Norddeutsche Allg.uneine- Zeitnng, writing from the Russian capital on the 12th inst., says ;
—“ Tiio numerous rumors of tho discovery of attempted outrages are to.. he attributed not simply to the general 'avidity-for sensational intelligence, but also, to the direct dissemination of such news on the part of* the Nihilists. Their object in this is to disturb the t -cnquility of administrative circles, .to keep the moneyed classa in a state of anxiety. :lt is more peculiarly agajnst these lastmentioned classess that the whole action, of the Nihilist's'proper is really directed. The design of this Catiiinarian hand is to bleed society and to eff et .a more' or less thorough change in the possession" of property, The attempts at assassination do not originate mainly in feelings of revenge. They do not form an ultimate ' object .in all themselves. Their object in cause of success is to' doma e the possessing or propertied c'asses in the eyei of the. masses of the people and to.incite the lower classes agaib st'lhom. This .agitation is dielped by the fact that other circles than those of Nihilists have bc-h angling f>r tin sympathWof the masses f ir the puroo e of a.Radical PanslavNt system - ut - btwr.nd .language. Of, the proclamation distributed hero in St. Petersburg, in which the Nihilist demand the summon-, iug of a National Assembly on tli« basis' of universal suffrage, must of the copies;
