Owing to continued wet last year, sheep rot is extremely prevalent, especially in the Midland and Western counties 10,000 chiefly ewes, are dead and dying. In a part of Oxford, Warwick, Somerset and Glouce - lei', a small portion only is felt. It i; stated it is expected that a large proportion of the lambing ewes will succumb. It is becoming a matter of serious consideration to wool growers. Tugs are bringing the mail steamer Hankow to Plymouth, her engines being disabled. Sydney mutton sold to-day at s|d to 6d ; beef, to sd. Beef is not drawing so quickly, as it is somewhat injured. Home beef and mutton average 6|d. American beef is the same us Australian. American mutton is 6d. Feb. 10. A sculling match took place on the Tyne, between Boyd and Elliot, for L2OO a side, the former winning easily. Rome, Feb. 9. The Vatican is at present engaged in a discussion on certain proposals, which have been submitted to his Holiness, with the view of promoting the union of English Ritualists with the Roman Catholic Church, New York, Feb. 9.
