The total quantity of wheat, afloat for Great Britain is 1,960,000 quarters. The Duke of Marlborough, LordLieutenant of Ireland, has refused to dine with the Lord Mayor of Dublin, because the latter recently presided at a Home Rule meeting. Jan. 27. Germany has formally warned Italy to refrain from hostile demonstrations against Austria. The latest news from Afghanistan states that Ahnub Khan and Mahomed Jan have united, and intend to entrench near Ghuznee, in a stronghold, to attack Cabul. France has annexed Tonquin. Lord Salisbury is ill. The Tekke Turkomans threaten Doshurd. A decisive battle is imminent. Teheran telegrams state that England and Persia have arranged that should certain events occur the latter shall occupy Herat. Arrived—Hampshire, from Melbourne, Orient, s.s., and Northumberland, s.s., from Adelaide : Decapoiis, from Cairns. Jan. 28. The Afghans of the Khost district are organising an expedition to attack Cabul. j Reinforcements have been dispatched.
