AN ARTFUL DODGE.
That Prince von Bismarck is- a man •ofresonrces is a fact which has just received amusing confirmation in a hit ■of gossip of which the Prince and Lord Odo Russell are th heroes. One day lately, when the English Ambassador called on the Chancellor, the conversation happened to turn on the numerous and wearisome visits the latter had to endure owing to liis -high position. How do you manage to get out of them ?” asked Lord Odo. “Oh, 1 have several little dodges,” replied the Chancellor, with a smile, “ For instance I have arranged with my wife for her to enter the room and request my ■presence elsewhere, on some pretext or -another—whereupon, of course, my visitor lias to leave.” Hardly were the words out of his mouth, when Princess von Bismarck opened the door and told her husband not to forget that the hour -for taking his medicine had arrived. The effect of this announcement on the' ■the Prince and his visitor may be imaginedbut it need hardly be said that the Ambassador was equal to the •'situation, and that Lord Odo Russell took the incident in good part, and, after exchanging a laugh and a cordial .■shake hands with the Imperial Chancellor took the hint and his departure.
