THE TONGA TREATY.

Tiie text ot a treaty of friendship between Great Britain and the King of Tonga is published in the Gazette. It is stipulated that “ if any subject of her Britannic Majesty in Tonga is charged with a criminal offenc e cognisable by British law, such charge may be tried by her Britannic Majesty’s High Commissioner for the Western Pacific Islands, or other British officer duly authorised by her Britannic Majesty in that behalf. If any subject of her Britannic Majesty’s in Tonga is charged with offence against the municipal law of Tonga, not cognisable as such under British law, he shall be amenable t<V the jurisdiction of the Tonga Courts, proceedings of which shall be condu'itoJ in public, and the record.; of which shall bo public and accessible. If any subject of her Britannic Majesty in Tonga is charged with a criminal offense cognisable as such both by British law and the laws of Tonga, the p rty charged may elect whether. he will be tried by a Tongan Court or by the ourc of her Britannic Majesty’s High Commissioner.” Great Britain agrees to surrender any, subject of the King of Tonga found within her dominions who may be accused or convicted ot murder, or attempt to murder embezzlement, or larceny, fraudulent bankruptcy, or forgery.
