London, Jan. 16. The 3 per cent Consols at 97|. Adelaide wheat, pei 496ibs, ex warehouse, is at 58s 6d. Australian tallow, best beef, is at 3Gs ; btjst mutton, 39s ud. Tenders for the Wellington Waterworks Loan for L 130,000 were opened to-day. The total subscriptions amount to L 500,000. The tenders of LlO3 16s will receive allotments in full, those at LlO3 15s 6d will be accepted to the extent of 65 per cent. A serious railway accident took place to-day at Orniskirk, Lancashire. Seven persons were killed and thirty seriously injured. .Reports have reached hero respecting renewed lighting between the Turcomans and the Russians. The latter, it is said, have been defeated, and have been compelled to abandon Tchikislar, the place from which the Russian expedition to the Turcoman country originally started.
Jan. 17. The British have defeated the Afghans at Dacca. The “ Cologne Gazette ” declares that hostilities between Russia and Germany are possible, and are likely to involve England, Franco, and Austria. The “ Times ” declar s the Berry embassy to be wholly inexcusable. The “ Pall Mab Gazette ” contends that Mr Berry has signally failed to cany out a Liberal programme, and has disappointed his friends and disgusted nearly all of his supporters. M. Frcycinet's policy is deicribed as colorless. The llnssian s have been defeated by the Turcomans, at a village on the River Attrek. They were finally compelled to seek refuge in the ships on the Caspian, and are abandoning their war material. Jan. 19. Although the Knliz incident is officially denied, it is credited by the Peace Party, which is in the ascendant. A circular has been addressed by the Czar to the European Powers, explaining the meaning of the troops in Poland ; also, stating Russia Lad advised Servia to accede to the Austrian demands. The British annexation of the Gold Coast has offended the French Press. Parliament will he opened next session by the Queen in person.
