MOUNT PEEL LOAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the abort Board was held in tl e Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday, loo!) Aug. Members present—Hon J. B. A. Acland (chairman), Messes J. Henev, R. MacL'ay, aod 0. G. Tripp. The minutes of the last nieeimg were read and confirmed.

Tenders for the following works weie accented :

Contract. No. 24, shingling near Peel Forest: James Riordan, £4O. No. 25, improvi ig Brake's road : Wm. Smith, £3 2s. No. 26, ploughing at Sherwood Downs : Michael O'Brien, 10s 6d No. 27, forming near Itaiocliff : Michael O'lK-ieo. £129 1.08.

No. 23, protective works near Tripp's Thomas Bates, £32.

Mr E. R. Guhmess had an iaterview wi;h Ihe Board, with'.reference to ereciing a public pound in'the. district. Letters 'were read 'from Mr M. Miliou and R. T. Button drawing the atiention of the Board to the necss-sity of a pound at Peel Forest.

A f ter some discassion on the subject, it was resolved that a pound be built near Peel Forest, and the overseer was instructed to select a site and prepare plans and specifications for the work by nest Eoawl meeting. The Oveiseer informed the Board that since the last meeting he bad received a notice in writint from Mr A. Reid, stating th?,t in making up his tender for No. 23 contract he had omitted making provision for certain parts of the work, and therefore delined to carry out the coutrc\ct- md having ascertained that the next tenderer was prepared to take up the contract, ho had consulted four of the members of the Board, who consented to let the work upoa certain conditions The conditions referred to being agreed to by the contractor, was let. The correopondence for the month was then read and considered : From the Union Bank of Australia, informing the Board thit the fkred depc its,* amounting to £15,000, weie renewed for twelve months. < From Messrs Miles, Hassel, and Co., with reference to Mr Cooper's contribution to the cross road in Peel Forest. From Mr J. Studholme, M.H.R., inference to the Rangitaia bridge. From the Crown I,andsr Office, Wellington, ro Berridge's claim, stating that (neTGovernment see no reason for departin"- from their former decision in the o matter. , Hj&m Mr J. Hitch, requesting the Board to form the road leading to section 30203, RainclifF. The Overseer was instructed to report upon the road at the next meeting. From T. R. Jones and Co., quoting price for blasting powder, dynamite, etc. From M- J. H. R. King, in reference to the plans of new roads on Raineliff. The Clerk was instructed to reply and request Mr King to forward the plans as soon as possible, as the Board has been put to considerable inconvenience by the delay. Prooosed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Tripp, and carried, "That in future any person tendering for any work to be done for the Board, shall, if the tender exceed the sum of L2O, deposit -five per cent, on the amount of his tender, or the tender will not be received, and if any tenderer refuse to carry out his contract the deposit shall bo forfeited^', M. O'Brien's claim for payment for taking out rock in his contract at Raiaeliff was considered, when it was decided to allow 2s 6d per cubic yard for half the amount of rock taken, put. Proposed bv Mr Tripp, seconded by Macknv, and carried, "That wherever solid rock is met with in any contract for which provision has not been made in the specifications, the contractor wiil be paid a uniform price of 2s 6d per cubic yard for the excavation of the same."

Eesolved that tenders be invited for the following works :

1. Shingling Sowerby's road. 2. Shingling the road to Rainclio 0 bash. 3. Eepniring and extending protective works, RninclifLp s:'|s§tlt%ings on Upper Rangitata road. Orari bridle track. AcromQisrHo the amount of LIOB2 4s 4cl were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned.
